Early Winter Snowkite Harvest
The first week of October has amazed all the Montana kiters: Nine out of 9 days of record breaking cold temperatures, snow almost every day, and wind, wind and more wind. These epic conditions have jump-started the Montana snowkite season into full swing.
We are all astounded by this first week. We are shocked that one kite spot – Norris Hill – the one that has had the best early snow, usually never holds any snow (it’s usually too windy!). This location is massive with over a dozen square miles to explore. Norris Hill’s got it all - easy flats for learning, rolling hills for casual boosting and mountains upon mountains of steep terrain for carving powder lines and gliding! If that was not enough, Norris Hill works regardless of wind direction and there is even a wind meter at the parking area! Need a break from the cold and wind? How about a visit to Norris Hot Springs? It’s called “Water of the Gods” and is a short six miles north of the kite spot.
Every day has seen a different group of locals exploring their own mountains, ridges and canyons of Norris Hill. The amount of terrain here continues to astonish us. How long will it last before a warm wind makes the snow disappear like ether? Who knows? Until then you can be sure that every day there will be kiters harvesting the goods and pinching themselves for such a phenomenal start to the winter.
See ya out there,
Noah
